Kids and Car Safety
Kids and Car Safety (KACS) is a national nonprofit based in Olathe, KS that is devoted to saving the lives of children and pets in and around vehicles. We do this important work through data collection, research and analysis, public education and awareness programs, policy change, product redesign, and supporting families to channel their grief into positive change.
KACS has a particular focus on 'nontraffic' incidents, which have been an overlooked area in safety initiatives. KACS is the only organization dedicated to addressing these widespread safety concerns.
Examples of nontraffic incidents include being run over in a driveway or parking lot, hot car deaths/injuries, cars stolen with children inside, drowning in a submerged vehicle, vehicles knocked into gear, carbon monoxide poisoning, power window strangulation, and trunk entrapment.
On average, every year, 3,400 people are killed, and another 726,000 are injured in and around vehicles off public roadways. Tragically, children age 5 and younger are at an increased risk. The overwhelming majority of child victims of nontraffic incidents are children in this age group.
