Summer Camps

Mahaffie offers a variety of camps throughout the summer with different themes. All camps feature lots of hands-on activities. Camps are recommended for ages 7-12 and limited to 15 participants. Registration for each camp is due the Fri. before camp begins.

Can We Build It? 1860s Style!  

Before nail guns and cranes, how did buildings get built? Try your hand at sawing, nailing and painting. Use pulleys to lift a rock and learn to cut stone. Each participant will create something to take home. Registration required and due Fri. Jun. 8. For this full day camp, please bring your own lunch. Snacks are provided.

Eating Goober Peas: Civil War Boot Camp

Sign up for a week in President Lincoln's Army! Recruits will learn to march and maneuver, fire a cannon, cook a soldier's far and make their very own haversack. Play games, enjoy music and participate in other soldier leisure time activities. Registration required and due Fri. Jun. 15.

Mon. Jun. 18-Fri. Jun. 22 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (each day)     Cost: $70

Rootin' Tootin' Cowboy Camp

We spend a whole day exploring the adventures and non-adventures of a cowboy in the 1860s! Learn about caring for a horse, cook on a chuckwagon, and learn to brand leather. Try your hand at roping a 'steer' and try on real cowboy clothes! Registration required and due Fri. Jul. 6. For this full day camp, please bring your own lunch, snacks are provided.

Sod Busting & Chicken Feeding

Many hands make light work! Join us for a week of 1860s farming fun as we care for animals, do laundry, work in the garden and cook up a hearty snack of farm foods. Other activities may include making shingles in the wood shop, grooming the animals, washing wool from our sheep and playing 1860s games. Registration required and due Fri. Jul. 13. 

Mon. Jul. 16-Fri. Jul. 20 (each day)     Cost: $70

Young Lady's Academy

Mrs. Mahaffie is opening her home as an academy for young ladies but just for one day! Girls will dress in 1860s clothing, learn how to cook on a wood stove, paint with watercolors and play croquet. End the day with a tea party and ice water footbath! This camp is just the thing for girls who wish they were born in the old-days! Registration required and due Fri. Jul. 20. For this full day camp, please bring your own lunch, snacks are provided.

Tues. Jul. 31 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (one day only)     Cost: $30, optional $10 1860s clothing fee (or wear your own!)
