HOUSING

There are multiple housing options for out-of-town students. Previous Summer Intensive dancers have stayed with family or friends in KC, sublet apartments nearby, or resided at the Kansas City Art Institute or University of Missouri-Kansas City as a Dorm Student (ages 12-20).

Attending students who are interested in subletting or who are looking for a roommate, please contact evonhofman@kcballet.org.

DORM LIFE

As our program has grown, so have our housing needs. For 2019, we anticipate housing ladies ages 12-17 at the Kansas City Art Institute, with ages 18-20 at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Gentleman of approximately 12-15 will be in residence at KCAI, with 16 and above at UMKC. Exact specifics are dependent upon enrolled students. The campuses of KCAI and UMKC are less than one mile apart, and are both adjacent to the lovely Country Club Plaza, a shopping and dining district.

  • Supervision: Resident Staff (Dorm Director and Resident Assistants) oversee students with a staff to student ratio of 1:18
  • Transportation: students travel to and from classes and group activities by school bus and passenger van
  • Dining: housing fee includes 19 meals per week; breakfasts and dinners take place in the KCAI Dining Hall (main floor of KCAI Living Center) and weekday lunches are made ahead of time and brought to KCB each day
  • Dorm-type: room set-ups include doubles and a few triples with community-style restrooms at KCAI, and four-person suites with a shared bathroom at UMKC
  • Nearby: students are able to check out in groups to explore campus, visit the nearby art museums, or walk to the Country Club Plaza (10-15 minutes)

The shared living environment requires students to be independent, considerate and responsible. Students are responsible for doing laundry and keeping their rooms and community spaces clean. As part of a larger group, students must act with the community in mind and adhere to all policies set forth for the safety and well-being of everyone.

ACTIVITIES FOR DORM STUDENTS

Students staying in the dorms enjoy numerous activities throughout their time in Kansas City. Group events typically take place on weekends and in past years have included a Kansas City Royals baseball game, Starlight Theatre show, Sporting KC soccer match, Worlds of Fun Amusement Park, shopping at the Legends Outlets and more.

Group events are required for all dorm students and are covered by the $350 activity fee. The fee includes all tickets, transportation and some meals.

Optional activities are also provided by the Resident Staff during the program such as a scavenger hunt, movie nights, and a chat with college dancers.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID

KCBS offers a limited amount of merit scholarships and need-based financial aid for the Summer Intensive.

Merit scholarships are awarded based on the audition and students receiving them will be notified in their acceptance letter. There is no application process. Merit scholarships must be accepted by the date listed in their acceptance letter.
