Juneteenth in Conversation - Saratoga Springs Library

During the month of June, join us in honor of Juneteenth as we read, listen, learn, and discuss topics in Black History in America. Each week we will focus on a historical topic by reading articles, listening to podcasts, or watching videos before meeting to discuss what we've learned. Please register online.

Week 1: The Tulsa Massacre For the June 3 meeting please read "‘Black Wall Street’: The history of the wealthy Black community and the massacre perpetrated there" and listen to the Smithsonian Institute's Sidedoor podcast episode "Confronting the Past."

Week 2: Red Lining For the June 10 meeting please listen to the interview or read the transcript of "A 'Forgotten History' Of How The U.S. Government Segregated America" and read "Why the homeownership gap between White and Black Americans is larger today..."

Week 3: The Criminal Justice System For the June 17 meeting please read "The battle for voting rights in the age of mass incarceration" and watch the TED Talk "We Need to Talk About an Injustice"

Week 4: The Black Experience in America For the June 24 meeting please listen to the "This Racism is Killing Me Inside" episode of NPR's Code Switch podcast and read "Walking While Black"

This online program uses the Zoom livestreaming platform. It will require access to a computer, mobile device with the Zoom app installed, and/or a phone for audio-only access.

Registration with an email is required in order to receive information on how to connect. The email will be sent three (3) hours prior to the scheduled start time of the program.
